ARMENIA'S MINISTER OF HEALTH VISITED ROME Celebration of the 25 years of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the Order of Malta

13 June, 2023

Today a reception and classical concert took place in the Magistral Villa located on the Aventine Hill in Rome dedicated to the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The official events were held under the auspices of the Grand Chancellor Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo.

Before the celebrations, Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan (Co-chair of the Assessment Committee of the Cooperation Agreement between Armenia and Order of Malta), accompanied by the Armenian ambassador to the Order of Malta, Garen Nazarian, held meetings with the Grand Chancellor. The talks, in which the Order of Malta's ambassador to Armenia, Domenico Arduini, also participated, focussed on the process of implementation of the bilateral projects and the possibility of exchanging the Order's international experience in healthcare and disaster risk reduction areas. Minister thanked the Grand Chancellor for the Order of Malta's principled position regarding the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor and presented her interlocutor with the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Nagorno Karabakh.

The Grand Chancellor and the Minister of Health then met the diplomatic corps accredited to the Order of Malta in the Chapter House. In their remarks on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee, the Minister and Grand Chancellor expressed a mutual desire to intensify cooperation in both the diplomatic and humanitarian sectors and promote the shared Christian values.

The reception was followed by a charity concert in the Basilica dei Santi Bonifacio e Alessio attended by many ambassadors, representatives of the public, religious and academic circles, and local press. In his brief remarks before the concert, Ambassador Nazarian emphasized the importance of furthering the political dialogue and bilateral relations in humanitarian diplomacy based on the centuries-old ties and Order's humanitarian activities in Armenia. The funds raised at the concert will go to the Order of Malta's healthcare programmes in Armenia.

In the framework of her visit to Rome, Minister Avanesyan also held meetings at the traditional Armenian institutions, including the Levonian Armenian Pontifical College and the Congregation of the Armenian Catholic Sisters.
