Armenia’s Foreign Minister visit to Portugal

On July 13-14, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is in Portugal on an official visit, met with Augusto Santos Silva, President of the Assembly, and João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic. 

In the MFA, two ministers commended the activation of bilateral political dialogue in recent years. They emphasized the importance of high-level mutual visits and contacts and the significance of regular political consultations between the two countries foreign ministries.

Ararat Mirzoyan and João Cravinho discussed the possibilities of expanding the Armenian-Portuguese agenda and deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The interlocutors focused also on the Armenia-EU partnership and collaboration within the framework of international organizations, and thoroughly touched upon global and regional issues.

Ararat Mirzoyan briefed his Portuguese counterpart on the situation in the South Caucasus, the latest developments in the normalization process of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, and the serious security and humanitarian challenges in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Within the framework of his visit, Minister Mirzoyan met with Augusto Santos Silva, President of the Assembly.

The interlocutors emphasized the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary ties to foster the development of Armenian-Portuguese cooperation in various spheres.

Minister Mirzoyan drew the attention of the President of the Assembly of Portugal to the humanitarian crisis resulting from the 7-month-long illegal blockade of the Lachin corridor. He emphasized the inadmissibility of Azerbaijan's policy, aimed at creating conditions incompatible with life for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and subjecting them to ethnic cleansing. In this context, the importance of voicing the mentioned issues by the parliamentary circles and achieving clear actions was also emphasized. 

Minister Mirzoyan also met with Nathalie Teixeira de Oliveira, Chairperson and members of the Armenia-Portugal Friendship Group in the Portuguese parliament. During the meeting, the interlocutors stressed the role of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing the bilateral agenda, emphasizing in this context the importance of effective cooperation of friendship groups established in both parliaments and their mutual visits and possible initiatives.

The delegation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia met with Dr. António Feijó, the President of the Board of Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.Mirzoyan highly appreciated the great contribution of the Foundation to the preservation of the Armenian identity and the development of Armenian studies in Armenian communities around the world. Minister Mirzoyan also underlined the role of the Foundation as an exceptional bridge in strengthening ties between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, Armenia's Foreign Minister toured the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.
