Ambassador Nazarian’s participation at the UN Conference

30 June, 2022

Lisbon, June 30 – Armenia’s Ambassador to Portugal Garen Nazarian made a statement at the 2022 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 which took place in Lisbon with the participation of a large number of member states, representatives of the international organizations and NGOs.

In his statement, the head of Armenia’s delegation mentioned that despite hardships caused by the pandemic and the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia continues taking steps towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. Garen Nazarian has presented the Conference the Armenia Transformation Strategy 2050 introduced by the government which has been built around 16 mega-goals of long-term socio-economic, educational, and human development objectives for the next 30-year period. He has informed that the goals are closely linked with those of the Sustainable Development Agenda and are effectively synchronized with Armenia’s national priorities and reform agenda.

Garen Nazarian has stressed the overarching and fundamental role played by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which provides land-locked states the right of access to and from the sea and freedom of transit. He called upon the participants to strengthen and further develop international cooperation within that universal legal framework.

The head of the delegation has also emphasized the need in establishing effective partnerships and networking between the member states and the private sector aimed at more public engagement that will help influence long-term change in policy and practice. In this context, the ambassador has welcomed the project on communication campaign, launched by UNESCO and advocated by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation UK Branch and its head office in Lisbon in creating an important platform for the new generation of change-makers.

On June 29 Garen Nazarian participated at the side event of the Conference entitled “Ocean Partnerships And Science-Based Solutions for Strengthening Sustainable Ocean Economies in SIDS, LDCs and LLDCs”. Speaking on behalf of the Bureau of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), he presented the participants of the interactive event with the position of the group by mentioning that whether we live on the coast, or on a landlocked mountaintop we need to ensure that ecosystems are essential for life on Earth continue to flourish and remain resilient. He stressed the need to be guided by the Vienna Programme of Action for LLDCs, which further calls for conducive national policies, international support and foreign direct investment to facilitate access to science, technology and innovation.

It is expected that the Conference will officially adopt the text of its Political Declaration which is a result of the intergovernmental discussions held earlier this year in New York.
