On January 22-25 Ambassador Garen Nazarian held working meetings with the Portuguese authorities and representatives of the Gulbenkian Foundation.

At the meeting with Ana Paula Zacarias, Secretary of State for European Affairs, the ambassador requested to expedite the process of ratification of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement which was delayed due to the parliamentary elections held in Portugal last year. The interlocutors discussed the implementation of the joint commitments within the Eastern Partnership program and exchanged views on the 2021 Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In Lisbon, Ambassador Nazarian held meetings with the Senior Advisor of the Portuguese President and Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others, during which the process of the settlement of the Nagorno Karabagh issue was presented, including the approaches of the Armenian side on regional developments. Issues relating to the cooperation between two countries in the multilateral fora were also discussed.

Steps to develop bilateral economic cooperation were included in the ambassador’s working agenda with Portugal’s agency for trade and investment (AICEP). In the presence of Luis Filipe de Castro Henriques, President of AICEP, the latter\s directors and vice-directors Garen Nazarian presented the benefits of investing in Armenia, economic indicators and the development score of the country, including the Moody’s sovereign credit rating as well as the recent assessments and forecasts made by the IMF and WB for Armenia. Discussions were also focused on the opportunities derived from Armenia’s membership in the EAEU, the bordering trade with Iran and the use of the EU’s Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) special incentive arrangement. The interlocutors highlighted the leading fields of tourism, innovation, and alternative energy in Portugal that are also among the priorities for Armenia’s sustainable development and agreed to organize seminars in Yerevan and Lisbon to identify the potential and opportunities for furthering the trade-economic relations and decentralized cooperation.

During the visit, Ambassador Nazarian attended the traditional annual meetings of the President and Foreign Minister of Portugal with the heads of the foreign diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited to the country.
